Grooming Updates
Trail conditions and grooming updates
In the last 8 weeks NSNA volunteers have worked over 75 hours lining up all the elements to provide groomed community ski trails this winter. Here's a list of some of the critical steps involved:
With snow melting, temperatures rising, and birds singing, it was time to load up the snowmobile and grooming equipment one last time. After a busy season the equipment is off to a well-earned tune-up and preparation for next winter.
Appleton Farms Plains Fields and Fields next to the Lamson Lot on Highland Street
We have an inch of fresh snow over a soft base, perfect day for classic sking wherever you want to go. Skating is soft and sedate, you’ll earn your strides, but you’ll get there. ✨✨✨☄️
The fresh snow covered yesterday’s bare spots, too. ⭐️
We are grooming at Appleton Farms Plains Fields from the Lamson Lot on Highland St. Thanks Jim Trudeau for the sunrise start! Crust cruising and corduroy for the skaters, some tracks for classic. A few bare spots but overall nice skiing! Thank you for supporting North Shore Nordic!
There is still plenty of skiing to enjoy! Volunteer groomer Greg went out this morning and made some beautiful corduroy on the two fields next to Appleton's Lamson Lot on Highland Street.
Last night we groomed the west side of Appleton Farms, the Plains Field, Lamson Field, and the adjacent Grassrides Fields. Because of the shallow frozen granular snow, our primary goal was to break up the frozen ruts and leave groomed corduroy. It is wide, firm, and should be fast for skating!
We left existing classic tracks, which are likely glazed this morning. Note that the access road and trail into the fields has a few small rough and bare spots to avoid. These areas are icy and hard, please be careful. Once in the fields, cover is good.
Happy St. Patrick's Day! Expect icy conditions in most places, with some sun softening later this morning in open areas. Appleton fields on the west side of the tracks are likely the best; they have the most snow, they were groomed last night and will be firm and fast, great for skating. Crust cruising is also a good option for skaters. Skiing ungroomed areas may be a better option for classic skiers in places.

Join ECTA Board Member Eric Krathwohl and fellow ECTA members on Saturday, March 24th for the rescheduled cross-country ski from Appleton Farms to The Black Cow restaurant in downtown Hamilton about 5 miles away. If we get as much snow as forecast, North Shore Nordic will be grooming the route.
